The most colourful water sport of Kerala, Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted
at Punnamada Lake, Alleppey on the second Saturday of August every year.
The traditional battle vessels of Kerala - Snake boats known as ‘Chundan
Valloms’, are the prime attractions of the festival. The sleek streamlined
design of these boats aids the swiftness of each craft. A hundred oarsmen
flashing their oars and churring the still waters in fascinating rhythm
and dip, which also showers spray into the air, manoeuvre the 60 –
65 metre lengthy vessel. Rhythmic chants and the beat of drums and cymbals
see the winner over the finish line. Each race ends in an upsurge of excitement.
The
first Race was an impromptu one held in 1952, in honor of the late Prime
Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He was so fascinated and in his return
to New Delhi he donated a ‘Trophy’ to the winners of the boat
race.
To
view this amazing Snake Boat Race of Kerala, The Great India Tour Company
invites you to join ‘The Race of Tradition’ tour which starts
from 7th August 2006.

Breakfast. Day trip to Elephant Camp at Paravoor.
Elephants have been an integral part of cultural Kerala from the time
immemorial. These huge mammals have always been loved, revered, groomed
and given a prestigious place in the state. Most joint families here in
the past owned elephants and their increasing number was considered a
status symbol of the family. But today only a handful of families own
an elephant. The rest have entrusted these treasured possessions to the
temple managements owing to the degeneration of the joint family system
and the rising cost of maintaining elephants.
Arrive at the village pond where the elephants bath, if interested you
could also join; feed the elephant. Later, you can have a ride on the
elephant (20 minutes). After lunch, boating through the scenic backwater.
Evening, return to Kovalam.
